One week ago yesterday, I became one of the 38 people laid off at Ubisoft RedStorm in Cary that made a couple of headlines. These past eight days have been an interesting experience, to say the least. Of course, there was the obligatory “let us celebrate your unemployment by drowning you in alcohol, serenading you with laughter and funny experiences” but at the end of the day, everyone else just goes back to their jobs, while I am left making good use of my newly opened schedule.
I’m not entertaining the thought that this last week has been a depressing experience, no far from it. At times, I have found myself saddened by the recent separation of my employer, but for the most part I am looking to the future.
I have frequently said that “failure is just another word for opportunity.” While I do not consider my recent layoff at RedStorm a failure, but just another cog in the gaming industry’s ever turning machine, I do think of the last eight days and my future as nothing more of an opportunity. Every job interview in my past that I have been a part of has been a learning experience, whether I get the job or not. Of course, if I’m not given the job, I think and rethink what I may of done wrong, what I did correctly, and what lessons I should take away from the interview.
The same theory applies here. It’s time to look back at my employment as something to be celebrated and cherished. I thank Ubisoft and RedStorm Entertainment with the utmost sincerity for all it had given me, and all that I had learned. It’s time to look to the future and make better opportunities. I plan on continuously working on this website, revising my resume, expanding my knowledge by adding more technical game development skills, doing a lot of reading regarding my passion for game project management, spending time to jump-start my company and find a new job relevant to my field and industry.
